Encounters with Joy: Encounters with Joy - A written collection from queer and Two-Spirit runners on Vancouver Island

In partnership with Youphoria Consulting, "Encounters with Joy - A written collection from queer and Two-Spirit runners on Vancouver Island" is a book, for the community, by the community. We recognize the profound impact colonization has had on Indigenous queer and gender-diverse kin and welcome Two-Spirit and LGBTQ+ Indigenous runners to submit their writing to this collection. Themes will be pulled from the submissions, whereby selected submissions will be accompanied by illustrations, naturally shaping the collection coming together. As is true of many activities, the gender binary and heteronormative values can influence 2S/LGBTQ+ peoples' experiences and leave us feeling not welcomed, or unsure about safety and participating as our true selves. When we run, we are free to be who we are. Encounters with Joy will undoubtedly be a heartfelt collection of experiences from within our community.

We invite contributions that share stories of connectedness to running, nature, our bodies and all that running can and does offer us, in the form of:

  • Poetry

  • Short Stories

  • Memoirs

We encourage submissions for established, first time or emerging writers; no publishing experience is necessary.

Questions are welcome and can be sent to encounterswithjoy@gmail.com.
